Building the future of estate planning: Announcing $1MM in new funding

When Ian Hull and I founded eState Planner in 2019, we did it to service the needs of our own estate practice at Hull & Hull LLP.

As an estate lawyer and adjunct professor of law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, I struggled to understand the lack of innovation in our practice area. There we were, helping clients plan the most important document of their life, scribbling on paper, white boards, and whatever else we could put our hands on to clearly outline what their estate plan looked like. Not to mention the hours of administration, document generation, revisions, and more. This is where the idea of eState Planner was born.

We created eState Planner to help visualize and streamline the process of probate tax planning. A tool that could help us deliver a better client experience, while reducing manual tasks. We’ve since evolved into a comprehensive will drafting tool, with big ideas for the future of estate planning.

As we worked with software developers to build the product, we realized other lawyers could see value from it as well. We were right, and over the past couple of years, we’ve grown our customer base and community to 400 law firms and partners across Canada.

Since eState Planner started as an internal tool to help us run our own estate practice, we decided to bootstrap the company. But as other estate lawyers have joined the movement, we’ve realized that we need to move faster, build more, while maintaining the level of support our customers have come to expect.

This is why we’re excited to announce that we’ve raised a $1MM seed round from experienced founders in legal and accounting tech. Mark Harris, creator of Divorcemate Software, Jamie McDonald and Jamie Shulman, co-founders of Hubdoc and Owen Duckman, Managing Director of a large Family Office all invested and are excited to support us in our next stage of growth.

We’re also growing the eState Planner team. From more product talent to help us deliver on our vision, to marketing, sales, and support professionals to continue delivering exceptional customer experiences.
